Three Days of Pinterest...

Yes, I'm late, I know!!

[had to get that out of the way]

I decided to get a Pinterest account a few days ago after hearing so much amazingness about it. Needless to say, I've only been on 3 days and I have about 13 boards and over 100 pins. Yeah, it's that ~~bad~~ good.

I have found many great ideas for Christmas decor and gift-giving, some fantastic new hairstyles to try [if Pinterest has only been useful for one thing, that would be it!] and also great new ideas for mixing and matching up some new outfits with pieces I already own. Not to mention my "If I Owned a Coffee Shop" board and "Someday" board [baby & kid stuff]!!

Here's a brief conglomeration of what I've found inspiring on Pinterest so far. I even uploaded a few inspiring images of my own. Check out my pin boards: Loveandcoffee.

So there ya have it....my latest obsession! I'm definitely having fun with this. I feel a fresh wind of inspiration every time I stop by! Even if I only end up pinning 1 or 2 things.

Oven-Poached Eggs in Spinach Nests

Time for a recipe! All of you Saturday morning breakfast junkies [my name is Brittany....and I'm a breakfast junkie] this would be a nice one to try for the weekend! I have made it on Sunday morning even, just make sure you assemble to Spinach mixture the night before, and refrigerate it!

-Oven-Poached Eggs in Spinach Nests-

Ingredients

— Spinach Nests:
Cooking spray
3 eggs
1/2 cup all-purpose flour
1 pound small-curd cottage cheese
4 (10-ounce) boxes frozen chopped spinach, thawed and well-drained
1/2 teaspoon salt
Freshly ground black pepper
— Eggs:
8 large eggs
1 cup shredded Swiss or Parmesan cheese
4 English muffins, split and toasted
1/2 cup slivered red bell pepper, optional
1/2 cup slivered onion, optional

Prep Time - 15

Cook Time - 40

Instructions

Preheat oven to 350F. Coat a 13-by-9-inch baking dish with cooking spray.
To prepare the spinach nests, combine eggs, flour and cottage cheese; whisk well. Add spinach, salt and pepper; stir well. (This can be done up to 2 days ahead). Press mixture into prepared dish. Make 8 indentations with the back of a spoon (this is where the eggs will later be placed). Bake 25 minutes.
Remove from oven and using a spoon, hollow the nests out even more deeply. Break an egg into each indentation. Bake 15 minutes or until whites are set. Sprinkle with cheese. Bake 1 minute.
Place 1 egg and spinach nest on English muffin half. Garnish with slivered red pepper and onion, if desired.

I did kind of "half" the recipe- I just used only one egg in the spinach mixture. I really love the addition of Red Bell Pepper, however I did not have it in the photo above. Try it! I also preferred the Parmesan over the Swiss, just my preference though!

Recipe adapted from Relish. I used to get the newspaper daily, and cut this recipe out like, 6 years ago. Glad I kept it!

I would definitely do this for a holiday brunch! If you have lots of family, or for Mother's day or Easter Brunch!

Life Updates!

Wow....yesterday I walked & jogged for 4 miles straight and today I don't feel like I've been run over by a Mack truck... [I believe this means progress!!]

I did, however, have a [small] injury yesterday before I even completed my first half-mile. I've learned the hard way to NOT forget to s-t-r-e-t-c-h after I train.....thankfully the pain didn't last but 10 minutes. I think I pinched a nerve or something. Obviously, I walked 3 1/2 miles afterward without any pain, so it was nothing traumatizing.

*IMPORTANT UPDATE*

Just some brief housekeeping! I've made some changes to the Paypal donation button to the right. It is now directed straight to Back to Life. *Don't worry* those of you who have previously donated, it still made it into my Back to Life account, but now the process will be a whole lot quicker. Instead of putting my name in the "Donation Notes", type in "BTL-020" [for tax purposes]. The code is also VERY important to ensure that it credits my BTL account. I want to thank everyone so far for partnering with me in my efforts to raise awareness to the injustice of abortion. I received a donation from the doctor that delivered me when I was born. Now that is encouraging!!

We celebrated my husband's 26th birthday last week! We started off with a nice breakfast early in the morning, oven-poached eggs in spinach nests on English Muffins....it was divine! I *promise* to post the recipe! I would have to say this is my favorite breakfast I have ever made. I was able to assemble the spinach the night before, but it takes quite a long time to bake, so I made sure to be up and in the kitchen by 6:45am :) I also served some red grapes, and a breakfast cupcake from the Cupcakery in Downtown Fort Worth! It was my lucky day- I remembered while I was out the night before that it was their grand opening! I may or may not have picked up a few more while I was there...you know, just in case one wasn't enough :)

Later on that evening, we met up with our families and a few friends for dinner...

Me and my amazing husband- I love him so much! God gave me the best. We've been married now for almost 3 years, and I can say I've never felt like I couldn't express my dreams to him, vent my fears, or just be myself. I'm anticipating a lifetime of bliss with this man right here :) I cannot wait to see our dreams unfold even more with every life event that happens day by day. Happy Birthday Love!

Training for...10 Marathons??

Twelve miles a day. For twenty-one days.

Training.

Tonight I jogged about 2 1/2 - 3 miles (need a pedometer!) with my husband. He challenges me and keeps me going. Well, not just in training, but with many other aspects of life as well :-) Last week my training started around 6:30 am, but the past few days it happened in the evening time. Which is fine with me, because that's when he exercises. Next week I think I'll keep it that way, except for the days when we're busy in the evening. I also have some cross-training mixed in. This week I tried Jillian Michaels 30-Day Shred. I'll leave that one alone. (my calf muscles are screaming bloody murder)

Food.

Tonight I had steak. It just sounded so good. Of course, my husband was the master chef on this one! Lately our meals consist of grilled chicken, salad, lots of vegetables, smoothies, grilled chicken, lentils & beans (cooked fresh), more grilled chicken, wheat berries, and lots of water. Breakfast consists of Greek yogurt, protein granola and fruit or oatmeal (nice & filling, especially since breakfast happens pretty early for us), lunch is usually a smoothie or a salad, and dinner a grilled meat with vegetables.

Before the training started, I met with a personal trainer for a personal fitness evaluation. I was actually told that I need to eat more. That kind of surprised me, but then I got to thinking about it; I eat like a bird. I pick at a little bit of food here & there, and anytime I try to eat a full-size meal, I am waaaay to stuffed in the end. I am a snacker. Albeit, a healthy snacker. I just need more sustenance. As in, more MEAT. I am not much of a meat-eater (unless curry is involved) so this process should be quite interesting. I need to make a better habit of documenting my meals!

Spiritual Journey.

Today was one of those days. I wasn't just putting in my 2 miles for the day. Even in training, I'm beginning to feel weighed down by the burden of 54+ million lives lost to abortion, and the spirit of death that has been cultivated in our country....and in our world. As I wearily jogged, trying to properly pick my tired feet up off the ground and keep from skidding (and watching my husband run ahead of me, farther and farther, only to slow down and jog in place to wait on me....what a guy), I had a moment with God. I didn't ask Him to lift the burden, but I asked Him to help me run the race that is set before me (Hebrews 12:1-3), even carrying this burden that is dear to His heart.

This journey is shaping me in so many ways already. I'll be expounding on this matter a whole lot more in the days and weeks to come; sharing with you the prayer journey and the studies that I'm devoting my time to....such as learning to live a fasted lifestyle- not fasting from food, although that's a part of it; but living fasted in the things I devote my time and my mind to, really learning how to lay down my own comfort and ease for the preparation this journey requires......and ultimately, really learning in a deeper way how to lay down my own wants and desires for a greater cause (sounds something like marriage....hmm). I am so honored that God chose me to carry this burden.

This is my destiny!

Had a nice, relaxing, low-key birthday on Monday.

I worked until noon, spent the whole afternoon with my mommy over lunch- a wonderfully thin pizza from Patrizio's, and then conversation over coffee at Buon Giorno, my favorite coffee shop in Fort Worth. (Locals-you must try an iced Tuscan Mocha!)

The we met my husband at the house and met some more family and a few friends at Gloria's. My husband brought me one of our favorites- a real cheesecake from J Rae's Bakery in Fort Worth! This cheesecake is not your ordinary cheesecake (it doesn't even contain cream cheese- that's the real deal!). They even wrote "Happy 22nd" on top; something they informed him they're never done on a cheesecake before :)

BIG NEWS! (and my first video blog!)

Happy Monday to all!!

You're probably here because you read on your Google reader, Facebook, or other blog feed, that I had big news.

So, I declared this an opportunity to make my first video blog. Mind you, I'm not very much of a natural in front on the camera. But, it was fun! {thanks to my husband for helping me out!}

And before you watch, I know what I'm going to say might sound crazy. When I first considered it, I thought it was too. But I was reminded of what someone told me once: "If it sounds possible, than it's probably just you. If it sounds outrageous and inconceivable, It's probably God."

Well, must have been God.

Recent Shutter Project

Good Morning! Today I wanted to share with you one of our most recent shutter projects. This is a lovely home located in Bedford. This customer bought this home about a year and a half ago, and has been working hard to remodel and make it her own. I love the layout- reminded me of a small, but spacious flat or town home in San Francisco. It already had shutters in the living room and we helped her design the new shutters to match the existing ones. They are the large 4 1/2" slats with hidden tilt (there is no tilt rod in the middle, as you can see). This look is my personal favorite- it's very sleek and uncluttered.

Sitting Area~ open up the shutters and you have a great view of her pool and patio.

With the slats a little more open... didn't want to open them too much because the sun was very bright.

The shower~ these particular shutters work well in the bathroom because the finish keeps them from warping or swelling from the moisture. They are finished with a polypropylene/ABS material- which is used for the inside walls of refrigerators and football helmets.

This is the kitchen window. These are the same shutters, only smaller slats because the window sill was not as deep. The wood piece above the shutters was already there. (There were shutters already in this window, but she replaced them because they were old).

The Cares of Life

I've returned!! I have no other reason for not blogging in several weeks besides the fact that I've been very busy. Lame excuse, I know! I have lots of blogging to catch up on and I would like to start with an article that I wrote a few months ago. I wanted to wait until it was published in our Sunday bulletin at church before I posted it on my blog. It came out on Father's Day so now I would like to share it with those who have not read it and maybe those who attend church with me but maybe missed it. I plan on rolling out more articles for this blog and the Sunday bulletin. A great big thanks to my grandmother Cathy (Nanny to me) for pushing me to start writing and for heading up the Writer's Guild in our church. She's my favorite writer. She captivates my attention faster than a cup of coffee.

I hope this blesses someone... if anything let it remind you to keep the main thing, the main thing. In a life where everything from bills, to work and everything else that seems to keep "flickering" and distracting your focus.... always keep a firm grip on your purpose and vision and always put everything into caring for your loved ones and keep God at the center of your life.

It was one week before Christmas; we were going to be hosting the holiday in our home for the first time. The following week, house guests were coming for New Years. We had already decided to do some last minute remodeling to our kitchen as well as paint a few rooms. My house was in shambles, and I was a nervous wreck as most house wives would be. I also had Christmas gifts that I still needed to buy, as well as some accounting to complete for our family business. I didn’t know how I was going to get it all done in just a few days. The Saturday before Christmas was especially stressful. I stopped in the middle of reupholstering a couch to go out and get lunch for me and my husband. I changed into an outfit appropriate for the public and grabbed my brand new purse on the way out. The painter had warned me not to touch the doorway trim because the paint was wet. But I was in a hurry.

In my rush to get to the restaurant, I wasn’t paying enough attention to how I was driving.

About half way there I noticed that I had brushed against wet paint and it was all over my purse and skirt, and even on my car seats. Even more upset and frustrated, I raced to the nearest convenience store to get something to clean it off before it dried. Stressed, hungry, and under the influence of caffeine, I hurried into the store. The first thing I heard was a very gentle, calm voice from the only other man in the store, besides the clerk.

“Mam, are you in a hurry?”

“Yes,” I replied abruptly, sensing that he had something more to say that I really didn’t want to hear.

“Did you know you cut me off, twice?” he asked. He was still calm, and sounded concerned.

“I am so sorry sir,” was my reply as I tried to get what I needed and leave quickly. I was afraid he was going to become angry with me.

“You know, you really need to be careful; somebody, if not you, could get hurt.”

Then I proceeded to tell him what an incredibly stressful day I was having and that I was very sorry for not paying enough attention.

After I paid for my items, I headed for the door hoping this gentleman wouldn’t say any more to me. But to my dismay, he did.

“Mam, please don’t become so consumed with your stress. I am 34 years old and I’ve had three heart attacks. Life is too short. Please take it easy. Enjoy your life!”

I thanked the man for his kind words; I apologized again, and hurried out the door and to my car. As I drove away, I suddenly felt that God had sent that man to speak to me. I began to think about how I was letting the stress of bills, time, chores, the holidays, and just everyday life control me.

Were these stressors causing me to cut God off? What about my husband and family? What about the stranger that I could have reached out to, but was too consumed with what I needed to get done?

Immediately, I recognized that this could be the very reason why, that lately, my every attempt at progress has been futile. God must have been trying to slow me down and show me that my stress had become the center of my focus. I began to realize that each and every stress was of itself, not a huge, life-threatening thing. However, when something small is placed directly in front of you, blocking your vision, it becomes all you can see, as it hides every beautiful thing around you.

I resolved from that day forward, that by the Grace of God, I would place everything in proper perspective. The things that had become stressors were indeed, important things. However, I cannot let them control my life. If I did, I would become a slave to temporary things, rather than a love servant to the One who gave me every beautiful and lasting treasure in my life.

Jesus warned us of the many snares of the enemy; one of them was becoming consumed with the cares of life. The cares of life will have us running around in circles if we don’t remember to put what is most important first, and that is Jesus.

Fort Worth Main St. Arts Festival!

Saturday was quite the day! This past weekend was the annual Fort Worth Main St. Arts Festival. We've made it a tradition to go every year for the past several years. Saturday was also the March of Dimes so it was quite the active day to be in Fort Worth! I was so happy, we had the BEST weather I ever remember having on the weekend of the Arts Fest. The day before was incredibly windy, and the air was extremely dirty because of the dirt flying around and the smoke coming from the wildfires in west Texas. They even had to shut down a few streets because the wind was so strong. Thankfully and surprisingly, we had crisp, clean and cool air the next day! Perfect weather for being outside!

The day started with breakfast with my friend Brooke at a local bakery called McKinley's in University Park. We love this place...their prices are very good and the atmosphere and service is wonderful!

They have great breakfast and lunch and an AMAZING selection of bakery goods for a very good price. I started of with what I call a "Power" breakfast...eggs, ham, tomato and cheddar on whole wheat, a bowl of fruit and some coffee!

The desserts are overwhelming! I ended up going with the Oatmeal Raisin and Snickerdoodle cookie. I have also had their Black Forest Cake in the past. Best I've ever had!

So much to choose from!!

Then I ran into some old friends from my childhood, the Montgomery's. I was in class for several years with their youngest son and my brother was best friends with their older son. We lived just down the street from them. I think every Arts Festival I run into someone I haven't seen in years!

I was also happy to see their oldest daughter Erin Kay...she was a senior in high school when I was in 4th or 5th grade and would come over with the seniors to mentor us younger kids. She was my mentor =)

After the excitement we went next door to Williams-Sonoma to browse....and I found what could now be #1 on my wish list....

Then we strolled across the street to the new Anthropologie in University Park....well maybe not that new..it opened last November! Here's a few photo's of what stood out to me this time...

This had to be my favorite this year! Artist Steven Meadows from Illinois. He made random figurines and wall art out of everyday junk. His pieces were so amusing. We had to go back to look twice! Each piece was exploding with personality. The little cans that look like fish in the photo above crack me up.

I loved these mirrors made out of wooden clothes pins!

The little guy in the bow tie was my favorite. Haha!

Can you believe this?!?! This is the ONLY photo I took of the food! Can't believe I forgot! The food was sooo good....Brooke & I split a plate of tamales from Riata and some brisket tacos from Cantina Laredo! I didn't feel like a funnel cake this year *surprisingly* - but I did scrounge up the a few last-minute tickets for a bowl of Dippin' Dots! A childhood favorite!

Tips on Shopping for Furniture {at thrift stores!!}

Today is a busy day, so I just wanted to quickly share a few thoughts on thrifting for furniture. A lot of times I find myself debating whether or not I should buy a particular piece of furniture because I don't know if it can be "fixed" or not. Then there are some days, I snatch it up and don't even give it a second thought- as was the case with my famous $15 couch. Then there are sometimes I have to "sleep on it" and hope to God that someone doesn't buy it. This is rare for me, but is was the case for the chair below:

I was shopping with my grandmother because she recently moved and is replacing most of her furniture. Looking for a good deal, but not wanting to have to "fix" anything, we stopped by Salvation Army right by my house. This particular SA always has an incredible selection of furniture, a lot of it not needing refinishing or recovering. But their prices are definitely higher than Goodwill. A lot of times GW will slap a tag that says $25 on something worth much, much more. But SA definitely prices their furniture by condition, style and brand. At least this one does, I don't know if I can speak for all of them. This chair is the very first thing I laid eyes on when we walked in. I was kind of let down when I saw the tag said $100. I'm used to stuff like $15 couches!!! So I walked in circles around it, sat on it, looked at the bottom of it, and tried to pull fabric to make sure it wasn't ripped anywhere. Alas, I knew I had to think about it. So on we went to the next store and I gave in and called Stephen. He was game. So, I hightailed it back to SA, and acted like my grandmother was buying it so we could get her Senior discount. So I paid about $90 after tax.

Here's a thought process I go through when considering buying furniture at a thrift store:

1. Does it have an attractive shape/frame? Usually I am drawn to things that do, so if I run by something and I have to figure out in I even "like" it, more than likely it's not for me. You know how it is- it's cheap, so why not? Maybe I can talk myself into liking it! Throw that mindset out when you enter a thrift store especially!

2.Does it have to be recovered, refinished, or reupholstered? This is probably the biggest part of the decision. A lot of times, you find things that make your heart flutter when you see it, only to turn it around and find a missing leg or a broken piece of glass, or something unrepairable. The $15 couch was no question. I did look at the back to find a broken leg, however, but the leg was still attached and just needed a nail or two and then it was good as new. The reason I decided so quickly to buy the blue chair above {after husband's approval} was that I did the math. After the discount and tax it was $90. Had I found a similar wing back chair at GW, I probably would have paid $25-$50 for it. Then I would have to buy the velvet fabric, which I could get for $13-$15/yard. I would need about 4-5 yards (or more, I'm just guessing because my couch took 13 yards). I'd also need to buy welting cord, tufts, upholstery tacks, and possibly paint or stain for the legs. So now we're at well over $100, and still needing to do the work, which I would have to take the time to figure out considering I've never done anything with tufts. Whew! So, I thought $90 was good for a ready-made chair!

3. Consider the style. Is it unique, did your lucky stars line up and drop it in your path? Or can you find droves of that annoying oak coffee table in Craigslist, all day, everyday? Does it look generic? Or does it look/feel like a "once in a lifetime" find? When it comes to furniture, I can't stand anything more than "generic" furniture. And when people on Craigslist advertise something as "vintage" or "antique" when it's just plain old.

4. This may sound soooo elementary- but do you have a place to put it? I keep a running list of things that I need.... to keep from buying things that end up floating around with no permanent home and end up at Goodwill or on Craigslist again.

5. It also helps to know furniture. I am still in the learning process, so I can't say I know a lot. I did, however, see a lovely faux bamboo dresser on a home decor blog a little over a year ago, and I thought to myself, wow, I would love to find something like that and paint it white and add gold or bronze hardware! I didn't really know anything about the brand or what it was. Then, while browsing Craigslist a few weeks later, you'll never guess what I found:

The very same dresser, only in a different shape. Online I had seen the tall chest of drawers. So that very day I drag my husband to Watauga to pick this thing up for $40. I kind of felt bad for paying that much, too. So did he, and I'll leave it at that!

So while I'm cleaning it out, prepping it for sanding, I see the brand imprinted in a drawer: Bali Hai. The date imprint on the back was January, 1969. I Googled it and found that it was very sought-after and selling anywhere from $250-$500, depending on which piece. So, I got quite a deal! Of course, we refinished it, and bought mother-of-pearl and brass hardware and it now lives in our entry way, {and no longer do we regret paying $40 for it!}

So, it definitely is good to know the value in furniture. This comes by buying furniture/decor books, reading magazines, BLOGS {!!}, and searching online via Google, or shopping on Craigslist. This is where the saying goes: "Practice makes perfect!" The more you read about furniture and "window" shop online, the more you have an idea of what's worth buying and what's not.

I hope this helps someone today. I have had very many people ask me for tips on buying furniture through CL and thrift shops. You may never again look at that vintage camel-back couch at Goodwill the same ever again!

Because I paid almost nothing for this dress:

Well, okay. Maybe I didn't steal it. Sure did feel like it though!

I was browsing Target today as I made {what was supposed to be} a quick run in to grab something from the pharmacy. Knowing I had no business looking at the clearance clothing, or anything else for that matter, my girl instinct told me to go look {what else is it supposed to do?}. And there it was, peeking out from the 75% off rack. I had seen this dress on clearance when it was first marked down to $30, but didn't want to spend that much. I was just certain it was stuck in the wrong place today. But, to my excitement, it dawned that beautiful reddish-orange sticker that is a Target clearance tag, that was marked only $9.98. Oh, and it was my perfect size. All was well in the world.

I decided to look through my shopping trip organizer to see if I had any coupons for some milk, because it get's expensive when you buy organic, you know. I didn't find any Horizon coupons, but I found one that I printed off from Target's website that I was going to use last week, and decided not to. It said "$4 off any Merona dress." all the stars and the planets had lined up. $6.

I kind of run-walked to the checkout feeling as if I was going to get caught. I also feared someone was going to yank it out of my hands at any given time. Alas, the dress made it safely home and into my closet. That's when I realized I forgot to get what I went to Target for in the first place. Oh, a girl's life. *Sigh*

And just to spill a big pot of beans, Target has loads of amazing clothes that were just marked down. At least in the the Fort Worth area. All the beautiful dresses that came out for Spring this year are making their way into the clearance section. Last night I was at the one in Hurst and they had an even better selection than the one I shop at, by downtown. Sounds like I go to Target everyday, right? Well I probably do now that I think of it!

A new challenge

Sometimes, I feel I'm not being challenged enough, and I begin to feel like every day is the same as the one before. This is a not a good thing...but feeling the need for a challenge is!! I've decided to make a list of goals- challenges- that I've previously thought to not be doable, and I am going to share them on this blog as a way to document my successes. Not that I thought these things were impossible, I just didn't feel like making the effort. Sounds pathetic, right? Well...."pathetic" would be my clothing predicament. I've been feeling like I'm in a rut and wearing the same few "old faithful" pieces a little too often.

This past Sunday evening, while I was getting ready for church I was having one of those "wardrobe malfunctions" {ladies don't act like you don't know what I'm talking about}. I didn't have time to change my hair, since I had to be there early for worship practice. I wasn't crazy about how it looked and it also limited my outfit selections. Everything I put on just didn't "jive". But, sometimes you just have to make things work anyhow!

This is where the "challenge" idea came into place. I told myself I needed to wear a combination that I've never put together before. {Surprisingly we did not end up running late.....this sounds like a long drawn out process, but I assure you it was all in about 20 min or less}.

So this was what I came up with:

You'll have to pardon the way I'm standing, my spiked heels where sinking in the grass because we had a very moist, dewy morning. We were in quite a rush so my husband snapped about 10 photos really quick as we ran to the car. Here's a close-up of my blouse:

I didn't realize it until after we took these photos that this outfit was quite a good deal. Skirt- $12 from Nordstrom Rack, my favorite store! {should have bought 3 of these! This skirt is simply the best basic black skirt I have ever owned!}, Silk blouse- $9.99 from ZARA {my other favorite!), Gray jacket- $15 from Forever 21, Purse (which can be a cross body or a clutch!)- $12 from Aldo, shoes- $24 by Jessica Simpson from Macy's. The skirt and jacket were Black Friday deals, the shoes were found on a shopping trip with my friend Brooke last summer, The silk blouse and the purse where some of my treasures I found on our Anniversary. On our way home from our little getaway, we stopped by Allen outlets and the Galleria, and found loads of good deals! My husband spent about $100 in the Nike store for 5 or 6 shirts, a pair of running shoes, several pairs of socks, and a few other random items. When it comes to finding good deals on clothes and shoes, he can put me to shame sometimes!! He's a a guy that actually loves shopping and finding good deals, and for that I am very glad ;-)

My next "challenge" is for both of us. I am going to plan a date night, complete with dinner, dessert or coffee, and something fun to do....for less than $25!! We'll see if it can be done! Any ideas you'd like to share, feel free to leave them in the comment section, I always love to see what others have to say!

Bedroom Inspiration, part one!

This post is dedicated to my {full of potential but currently bland} bedroom.....and the inspiration to get it in shape. Chop chop!

I have focused SO MUCH on the rest of my house in the past 2 years we have lived in it, and I have not yet put effort into decorating my bedroom. I don't think I'm the only one who suffers from this...{now I'm becoming painfully honest}...but maybe I haven't been as motivated as I should be... because I can just simply close the door when we have guests.

I have decided to DROP KICK that mindset!! Shatter it's teeth!!

{Sorry if I just made you cringe...I happen to be a very visual person and it helps to think about it that way.}

The bedroom is one of the most important rooms in a house, in my opinion. While every other room serves each in a unique way, and indeed each is very important, no other room in the house is as special as this one. This is the place that serves not just as a place to sleep {which is how mine feels at the moment}, but a place to shut away all the cares and happenings of the day. It's supposed to be a haven. It should be a retreat; calming, refreshing, inspiring, revitalizing. This is where we start our day, and this is where we end it! I want to start my day feeling inspired by it, and end my day by being drawn into it. That's what I am going to try to achieve.

On the to-do list of things that need to be accomplished de la chambre...

Get rid of unneeded clutter. Enter: Craigslist. {this process has just begun)
Take down the cheap-o curtains. We would like to do custom window treatments eventually.
Find our own furniture. We've been using Stephen's sister's dresser, tables and armoire ever since we got married. Her and her husband moved out of their house to evangelize right before we got married and let us use it temporarily. Now that they've settled down in Chicago I think they'll want it back pretty soon!! Which leads me to....
Make a headboard, buy a bed frame. Our mattress and box have been laying on the ground for over 2 years now. We would love to have an upholstered headboard, but they run pretty pricey for king size. I've had zero luck finding what I want on Craigslist, thus the decision to make our own. Plus, I can really customize it.
Refinish the (below) beautiful 1950's vintage armoire that that Stephen picked up for....ummm free. I don't even remember where he got it, it was almost 4 years ago. It's a beauty, but it needs a little TLC.

When you open it..it has drawers and shelves to the left, and a rod to hang clothing on the right with additional shelving space above, which would be great for Stephen's extensive hat collection!

What's even more charming is the little labels on each shelf/drawer to organize pajamas, hats, shirts, under garments, sundries (need to find out what that is lol), gloves/scarves, etc.

Oh! It has a mirror too, with an awesome little bowl of sorts for "studs"...which I'm predicting will be used for tie clips! (cheap-o curtains I spoke of pictured behind yours truly. a gazillion paint samples, too.)

This is the label on the inside. I have tried to find more information on this brand, and from what I'm getting, this wardrobe must have been quite a find! I can't find one for sale anywhere and it looks like they origionated in the UK?.....I need to do a little more research.

The list above is just the beginning of what needs to be done. All of the decorating and painting comes after that. I do, however have somewhat of a head start- I already have bedding.....my grandmother wanted to buy a gift for both Stephen & I, preferably something for our house, and I chose the below Oragnic Cotton Pintuck duvet, in white, from West Elm.....

I also picked up 2 Hoopla Lamps in Amber from Crate & Barrel a few weeks later....

So now.....I think the most important thing to do would be create several inspiration boards, so that I do not end up buying things and "changing my mind" a few days/weeks later. A game plan needs to be put in place!

So where is a picture of my bedroom in it's current state.....that's not happening....yet. I have not the guts!

This is just the beginning....My mind is overflowing with ideas! So for now I'll just wait until I can condense them all in to a few inspiration boards.

Saturday Morning...

Ahh...Saturday morning. Time for sleeping in......

Coffee with the husband {we have coffee everyday, but today is special because we have it together}...

Sock Monkey Slippers.....

And a SWEET breakfast!!!

I LOVE this baked pancake...so I wanted to share it with you!! This is one of our favorite Saturday morning treats!! I started making this shortly after we got married..and needless to say....it makes it's rounds :) I got the recipe from Betty Crocker.

Baked Pancake

Ingredients:

2 Tbsp butter

3 eggs or 6 egg whites

1/2 cup all-purpose flour

1/2 cup milk

1/4 tsp salt

Assorted fresh berries

Syrup

Powdered sugar

Directions:

First, preheat oven to 400 degrees. Place the butter in a 9" glass pie pan...

Place it in the oven just long enough to melt it. Remove from oven and spread the butter around the sides and bottom of the pan...

This step is very important!

In a medium bowl, beat eggs just slightly with a whisk or hand beater. They should look something like this...

Still kind of gloppy...whites and yolks should not be blended.

Beat in flour, milk, and salt just until mixed {do not over beat}.

Pour into the pie pan. A lot of the butter will sit on top of the batter kind of like this.....

Bake 25-30 minutes, or until puffy and deep golden brown. Serve immediately. My convection oven usually takes exactly 25 minutes.

Fill with strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, or bananas, whatever you prefer! Today we had strawberries and bananas! You can also dust with powdered sugar, if you'd like {we don't go without it!!}

We usually cut it into 4 segments and eat 2 each. Today I had Maple syrup with my first piece and Raspberry with my second piece! {told you...Saturday morning is a time to SPLURGE!}

These syrups are available at Central Market, I am sure you can get them at Whole Foods as well. If you can't find them, I highly recommend Blackburns!

Today I got creative and added a little squirt of juice from a sweet Meyer lemon! Mixed with the powdered sugar it reminded me of a German Pancake!

Meyer lemons almost look like oranges when you cut them up!

And just to add a little more sappyness {or should I say syrupy-ness} to this post...this is written on the inside of our Mr. and Mrs. coffee cups...which were wedding gifts.....

Isn't that so sweeeeet??? I love it!

Favorite Things....

Artwork.

Today I wanted to share a few pieces of artwork that are dear to me.

This first piece is no stranger to my blog. This was the painting my husband has commissioned for our engagement..... I consider this one of the greatest gifts ever given to me and I treasure it :) I just recently bought an easel to set it on, rather than hang it on the wall. I like it better this way. This Painting was done by the amazing Anna Rose Bain. I love her work and I would definitely LOVE to have her paint another portrait in the future!

The next piece is very special to both of us...This batik was a gift from our Aunt and Uncle in Sri Lanka. They brought it to us for our wedding. I am so very happy they were able to make it. I absolutely love this piece for the excellent lines, details, and of course, the sentiment :)

I currently have it hanging in my dining room.

I just love the beautiful colors and exquisite detail. I am hoping to meet this artist when we visit Sri Lanka (hopefully this year!)

Gettin' down to business

As many of you know, the house we live in was a MAJOR fixer-upper.....and I mean a tear it down to the studs, give the outside a facelift and *give the neighbors a sigh of relief* kind of fixer-upper. I have been wanting to share a few before and after photos of our first home, so here they are! Today we're going to start with the kitchen.

Those of you who are friends with me on Facebook, may remember I was remodeling my kitchen...the week of Christmas. Ummm.......... yeah.

Well, I only told part of the truth. I was actually painting the kitchen/dining room, painting the office, wallpapering and accent wall in the dining room, getting new kitchen counter tops, getting an island built.....and reupholstering a couch. All in about ONE week.

{Don't try this at home, kids}

It sounds insane, I know. But in actuality it was not as big of a deal as it seems. The painter took 3 days to paint our office, kitchen and dining room, the cabinet maker was able to build the island in just 6 days and when he delivered it, all I had to do was put my stuff in it. The granite guys took only about 5 hours to rip off my old counter tops and install my new ones, and my mother in law helped me with the couch, together the two of us knocked it out in just a few days. And my father in law came over and wallpapered one wall in my dining room in just a few hours.

Then we hosted Christmas dinner, just 2 days after it was all done. All went well. I was one happy little housewife.

I promised pictures of my newly remodeled kitchen so I must share. We still have just a few things left to do, but they are not that important to worry about right this very {red hot} second.

This is what the kitchen looked like when Stephen VERY FIRST bought the house. Before any renovation of any kind:

I find it hard to fathom that someone actually lived in this. *that gives me the creepy-crawlies*

The oven must have had 70 years worth of grease accumulated inside and out.

I just find all this brown completely disturbing.

I've run out of captions. It's that bad.

The initial remodel was nothing fancy. Stephen had already just about emptied his savings on this house and decided to make the kitchen simple.....kind of a "starter" kitchen. Eventually we would make in nicer, when we had the funds to get what we really want. Here's a PROGRESS photo:

**Edit- This is what the kitchen looked like for about 2 years!**

CLUTTER. It's everywhere. Not a single place to put anything. Approximately .0025 sq. ft. of cooking/prep space and home to the ironing board and iron! Things piled high on top of the refrigerator!The door to the lazy susan is broke off {for the Nth time} in this photo, and there is a huge gaping space in the middle that made you feel like you were a microscopic amoeba floating in outer space! Walking to the refrigerator was like trekking across the Sahara Desert. Oh, and about 12 light bulbs were out at the time. Unfortunately, I didn't take any close-ups of the cracked counter tops. I'm sure you would have loved to see them :(

Fast forward a week or two later and we have yet another progress photo:

Walls have been painted {Cedar Key by Benjamin Moore}, island has been designed and is being built {at the cabinet maker's shop}, and the old counter tops have been ripped off.

And this my friends, is what she looks like now...

Nice and clean. Organized, and totally happy.

A good look at my island....on this side I keep my cook books, part of my Martha Stewart white ware collection, serving bowls, bread basket, and some chargers.

I love my cook top/convection oven....favorite thing in my kitchen!

This is the other side of the island. I have one cabinet door where I keep cutting boards, measuring/mixing bowls and such like...and 3 drawers {the bottom one is deep enough for my pots and pans!} and the skinny door on the end is possibly my favorite part.....

WOW. That'a a lot of tea. In all honesty we really do drink that much tea. And coffee. If you are to ever come over, you won't leave until you've had a cup {or two}!

Speaking of coffee..here's Mr. Cuisinart himself. And a cute little slate board used for inspirational messages and motivation. Today I wrote "Make it a POSITIVE and PRODUCTIVE week!" Just gotta encourage yourself sometimes! Also pictured is a great piece of art by Heartfish Press, purchased from MadeByGirl.

The only thing left that I would like to do is make a box for the microwave and hang it, to clear some more counter top space, and add a few bridge cabinets maybe, as well and replace the stainless steel trash can for a concealed pull-out trash can and recycle bin. I also am thinking about adding hardware to the island. I still have a bunch of extras from our first remodel.

We also purchased a new under-mount 40/60 stainless steel sink, as well as a new faucet.

I love this....my mom got me this serving platter for Christmas... and while it's not being used for a turkey or chicken I use it to hold our fruit and veggies that we are always snacking on. *Yes we snack on fruits and veggies. The other day I saw Stephen running out the door with a whole tomato in his mouth.*

I spend a lot more time in the kitchen now that I have a organized, spacious place to cook and entertain. I have also found that the island creates a nice gathering place when we have people over. It's a guest magnet. Just add drinks and cake and you've got a party!

I am working on collecting the photos of the rest of our remodel. Until then, I'll be posting some other great projects and inspiration!

Striped Hallway!

Sheepishly, expecting him to give me a crazy look and say" you want to do what?".... I told my husband I wanted to paint gray stripes in our hallway.

So the next day, he went to Home Depot and bought me a laser level, yardstick, pencil, and 3 rolls of paint tape. No questions asked. Booyah!

He is so awesome.

So this was several months ago and I still get looks and compliments from everyone that walks through my door. I am so happy with it. One of my favorite DIY's I have ever...umm....DIY'ed.

SO...I thought I'd share with you a little tutorial. Almost anyone with any painting experience can figure out how to do this, but being the first time to ever do anything like it, I am astounded at how well the whole process went. All of my stripes turned out exceptionally perfect and straight. So for those who may not know where to start, here is a little help!

First, you will need a wooden yardstick (or a ruler, whichever you prefer), a laser level, and pencil and eraser (because you'll more than likely slip and make an accidental mark), and of course paint tape. I used blue tape, but all I had when taking this photo was green. I must say- GOOD paint tape is absolutely imperative!!! You cannot afford to get cheap tape. I'd say this is the most important tool. I used Scotch blue tape.

This little thing is worth more than I paid. Only cost $20, but I have found it to be valuable for other home improvements...especially hanging pictures! No one likes putting multiple holes in the wall. This assures you that it will be straight the first time. It has a vacuum suction cup on the back, when you turn it on, a laser shoots out of one side, along the wall, all while sticking to the wall so you can move all along the wall drawing your line without having to keep moving it. I do have an old house, and the walls bowed out just a little in some places, do I did have to keep moving it in a few places.

Here is a photo after I finished my stenciling. I measured 6" from the ceiling and made a pencil mark. Your ceiling might be a different height from mine, so first measure it {make sure to not count the moulding} and figure out a measurement that will make all stripes even, from top to bottom {you don't want all of your stripes to be 6" and the bottom one turnes out only 3"}. Luckily, mine happened to be an even 6". Start making stripes by leveling the laser to your pencil mark and sticking it to the wall. Line your ruler up to the laser and draw a line...repeat until you have a solid line all the way around, or wall to wall, whatever your case is. When you start a new level, simply measure down from the previous line and make another mark. You will have some serious calf muscles afterwards from climbing up and down the ladder! This is the most time consuming step.

You can easily lose track and mess up here. Focusing is key! I taped the ceiling, since I don't have moulding up there. It is important to make sure you tape on the correct side of the line. It helped me to write the word "gray" in the inside of the lines that were to be painted. That way I knew the tape needed to be on the outisde of the lines. So when you are done taping it should look like this....

Notice how every other stripe looks slim? Those are to be left white on the inside. The wider stripes are to be painted.

When you are done taping, run your fingers along the edges and make sure there are no bubbles where the tape isn't all the way on. This will cause paint to run! No bueno.

Here you can see we started painting the inside of the wider stripes.....I highly recommend using a roller brush.

Again....

Almost done!

I'll be honest, at this point, I was scared. It just looked like SO MUCH gray!!!

Next step: peel all the tape off and make a huge tape ball!!! =D Actually.....you can skip that part if you want.

We waited about 3 hours before we took the tape off.

And here was the final result...

I have since moved things around as well as gotten a better camera...so here are a few photos I snapped today...

Thai Red Curry!

Or as Stephen's mom would say it in her cute Sri Lankan accent, "cuddy". =)

I've gotten lots of requests for this recipe. It was always on the list of those dishes that I thought I would never be able to make just because it was soooo good and seemed so hard...and the first time I tried it, was an EPIC failure! We have a favorite Thai restaurant in Arlington- Thai House- their red curry is pretty much the best I have ever tried! Now I can make it at home whenever I want instead of driving to Arlington. We still visit often though- they have ann array of fantastic dishes!! The Drunken Noodles and fried rice is another favorite!

And of course.....because it's always fun to look cute while cooking.....

{coming from someone who used to change into a t-shirt to cook for fear of getting dirty}

There are lots of variations to this dish. If you have an aversion to fish sauce, you can use 2 tsp soy sauce instead {I always use fish sauce}. Also, never use sweetened coconut milk."Thai Kitchen" and "Taste of Thai" brands are not good beacuse the are sweetened. I usually use the ones what you can't pronounce the name. Those are usually the best! Also- I use Mae Ploy red curry paste from Central Market. Depending on what brand you use, they may taste different, so you'll need to start out with just 1 Tbsp curry paste and see how it tastes. I always use about 1 1/2 - 2 Tbsp. We like it hot! And remember, as with anything else- easy on the salt!!! Too much will ruin this dish!

Thai Red Curry
This recipe serves 2-3 adults

First, Start with getting all of your ingredients together. This dish is fast-pace so you'll need to make sure everything is already handy. Make sure to slice your chicken as thin as possible. Have your carrots peeled and chopped and your bell pepper sliced before starting.

Ingredients:

Coconut oil (olive or veg. oil is fine, but coconut oil has the best flavor}

1 whole boneless/skinless chicken breast, sliced thin

One 13.5 oz. can unsweetened coconut milk

1 Tbsp red curry paste, or more, if you like it hot
1/2 cup water

2 Tbsp fish sauce

1 Tbsp brown sugar

salt to taste

1 red bell pepper, sliced

3 med. carrots, peeled and sliced into 1/2" pieces

3/4 cup frozen peas, slightly thawed

1/4 cup chopped fresh basil, plus more for serving

Jasmine Rice, for serving

1. Cook jasmine rice according to package instructions. I always use the rice cooker.

2. Melt coconut oil in wok (or large pot) over medium heat.

3. Add chicken and cook while stirring. When chicken is a little over halfway cooked, add half of the coconut milk. Cook and stir until it thickens and starts bubbling.

4. Whisk in the curry paste until combined and boil gently, stirring occasionally, for 2 minutes.

5. Add the water, the remaining coconut milk, fish sauce, brown sugar, and basil; bring to a boil. Cook, stirring constantly, for 2 minutes; season to taste with salt {Remember- easy! I just use a pinch}

6. Add your vegetables and boil gently for about 2 to 4 minutes, until they are heated. Do not overcook, they will become mushy!

Serve over rice, and top with more fresh basil. Hope you enjoy it!!! If you have any questions just comment!

Couch makeover!

It's almost Friday!!!! I love the weekend....it could be relaxing, or full of adventure....you just never know!! I don't mean to throw Monday under the bus.....I love Monday too. Especially for being self-employed....so many new ideas to work on and plan for the coming week. I am very excited for what's in store for our company in the near future, great big announcement to make in the next week or so! EEEK! I am so excited for a new business venture...but...I don't want to spill too many beans so I'll hush for now. =)

Speaking of our business, I'll be adding a new tab at the top of the page that will give you much more info about Trinity Uptown Construction. Many have asked me about what me and my husband do, so I'll be more than happy to share more info about our biz.

Because Friday is so exciting, I am going to get a head start and show you all what is probably my favorite project to date. I did this back in December. After this, I just don't know if I want to reupholster anything else for quite a while. It was a pain in the rump. I'm still cringing at the thought of having stapled my finger with a high-pressure staple gun. *shudders*

It was $30 because it had a broken leg in the back, which was not even detatched. It was simply cracked and we fixed it, you would never tell it was ever broken. I had my mother in law help me with it, she had reupholstered 2 chairs in her living room so she knew the ropes.

I found the purple velvet at Cutting Corners on Hulen Street in Fort Worth. I love that place! They have an incredible selection at great prices, and very friendly and helpful customer service.

Monday we celebrated our wedding anniversary. 2 years!

It goes by so fast. I just know that it was the best decision I've ever made, and I hope to always return to him the kindness and love that he shows me unconditionally, everyday, no matter what. God blessed me with such a treasure. I love him so.

Although our anniversary was Monday, we started celebrating Sunday afternoon. We went to a new restaurant in Fort Worth's West 7th neighborhood {our favorite hang out!} called Brownstone. We've been anxious to try it, and I must say, I was very good. The brunch was amazing and I pretty much talked Stephen's ear off while I drank 4 {!!!!!} cups of coffee. All in all, it was enjoyable. We then headed to Hotel ZaZa {!!!} in Uptown Dallas. We have been wanting to try this hotel ever since we first got married. We've been priveleged to stay at many luxury hotels, and this was definitely one of my favorites! The room was beautiful. The entryway was alluring. Of all the times I've been around Dallas, I've never been down McKinney Ave! I absolutely loved it! So quaint and picturesque.

I loved this lamp. Definitely got the diy wheels in my head turning!

One of these days, I'm going to have a pink chandelier in my entryway. That's that.

After Dinner at Ocean Prime. We had quite a meal...started out with Oysters Rockefeller, which was simply to-die-for. We both decided on the same entree, Crab crusted tilapia. And chocolate cake for dessert. Oh, and our server looked just like Michael Buble.

The next morning we hit Bread Winners, also in Uptown Dallas. I knew as soon as I walked in, I had a new favorite Sandwich shop! The have more than sandwiches though, the have a great breakfast and dinner menu as well. It was such a beautiful day! The perfect day to sit outside and have lunch. Great conversation was had, and lovely memories were made!

We then went inside to get a few sweets to top off the wonderful meal. Didn't take me long to find the strawberry cupcake =D

What an enjoyable day spent with each other! I have such a fun husband =)

I am such a sentimental mess. My middle name is nostalgia.

I found this while going through my Paris videos. We recorded this video to post the week after our wedding. When we got online at our hotel, not only was it going to take over 30 minutes to upload {and we couldn't figure out a better way to do it} and the internet was pretty $$$ insane! {Speaking of the hotel in which we had to pay to use an ironing board. So, if that gives you any idea.} We decided to wait, and my patience ran out after several attempts. I was saddened by the fact I never posted it, so I had to redeem myself.

So, here you go, 2 years later......

We were so cute. All newly married & stuff.

And yes we did, in fact, pay about $27 for a McChicken and a Cheeseburger.

Happy Monday!

The beginning of a new week, I love it. Especially this week. Last week we were snowed and iced in and I was sick with the flu. A bad case of it, too. The week before Stephen was sick. Being self-employed, it's not so easy. But atleast you can work from the bed. I got my laptop out one day while I was bed-ridden. I meant to do some advertising, but ended up watching 4 documentaries. Needless to say, I am happy to start a new week with NO snow and ice, and NO sickness!

We visited Stephen's sister and her family in Chicago this past August. After evangelizing for a few years, they settled down in Chicago last summer and are now pastoring a church. We took a quick weekend trip to St. Charles to visit them and thier new church. I thought I'd share a few photos from our trip.

Washington, DC {last post!}

FIIIIIIIIIINALLY {!!!} got around to posting this last installment of our trip to our Nation's Capitol. I really have a lot more photos (we took about 400), but I'm going to take this last post to show you mainly highlights of the last 2 days. It was SUCH an eventful 4 days!

In other news....our 2 year anniversary is this month! AND we are planning to take a trip to Sri Lanka this year! More details as they come together. I am excited!

Washington DC, Day 2, part 1

On to day two of our DC trip. This day was so eventful I will have to split it up into two posts.

So after a breakfast of bagel sandwiches, we started walking down 14th Street when we came to this intersection and saw the Capitol off in the distance. (if you look close, you see the dome to the left, it's a little hidden)

So we turned left on to Pennsylavia Ave and took pictures along the way. Here's the World Trade Center.

...then a nice Indian Family stopped and asked us to take a photo....and returned the favor =)

I found these columns interesting...when the US Capitol was torched by the British during the War of 1812, these columns remained untouched by the fire.

My 2011 New Year's resolution: to blog atleast once a month {hey, it's a start!}

This blog post brought to you in part by Starbucks free Wi-fi. {I am working from my coffee spot on 7th Street because my house currently smells of paint and looks like a train wreck {more on our kitchen remodel later!}

Here is the first set of photos from our trip to Washington, DC. Stephen & I took a quick weekend trip {Thursday-Sunday night} at the beginning of this month. What a fun time! We stayed at the Donovan House Hotel- I must say- one of my fav's! Here's proof:

I so amazed at how fast this year went by! I meant to post on the first of this month but I didn't want to until I had time to sit down and take my time. It is so hard to believe that in 16 days we will celebrate our first anniversary! Alot of people say, when referring to how long they have been married, that 2 years felt like 20. Well.....I have a hard time relating to that because 12 months feels like 12 weeks to me. I look at our wedding photos and I am in 100% disbelief that it was a year ago! Speaking of wedding photos, I never really got to finish posting them. When there's nearly 700 photos it takes alot of time that I simply did not have the past few months! So for our "anniversary month" (why just celebrate it on one day only? I'm even putting out anniversary decorations! Ha! Call me crazy :), I am going to finish recapping our wedding. Then in March move on to other things that I have up my sleeve.

I have this crazy feeling this is going to be nothing short of a wonderful, BIG, and busy year! I am anxious and giddy to see where we go, what we do, what we learn this year. =)

And just because I like to add a picture to every post...this is me with my *classy* friend Hannah and her sister {childhood friends}....

First of all, here's Stephen wrestling with my veil. I was thinking, "This is already beginning to be funny...."

Now here we are looking at each other like, are we gonna do this or what? I mean, we CAN kiss, right?!?! {what's even funnier is right after this picture was taken, my veil fell back over my face)

Latest project!

Just made this! I grabbed some fabric from Joann (30% off!), 3 boxes of upholstery tacks, and a framed cork board, which you can get anywhere.

BIG THANKS to Lynn from 2 Excited Nests for this idea!!!! So creative!

First I ironed the fabric. Very important =)

Plain, ugly cork board.

Laid the fabric over the board. Make sure you work on a flat, steady surface, and that the fabric is lined up just like you want it.

It's a little tricky getting the tacks just right...

I placed the tacks an inch apart.

After I finished the tacks, I turned the board over to notice a bunch of tacks poking out! Ooops... So I pulled the fabric over {and doubled it} and then stapled it to the back of the cork. I allowed 4" all around, it was just enough to double, then cover the spikes.

The corners were thick so I folded them carefully and used a tack to secure them.

All done!!!! =)

....that is my LIVING ROOM! or better yet, my whole HOUSE!

These two rooms I am particularly loving how the look at the moment.....but I still need a little inspiration......

my dining room. no, still haven't found the perfect gold candles for the glass candle holders on the table. i really love the colors that ended up coming together in the dining room, the brown wood, with accents of gold, and the blue table runner.

one side of the living room, which i really like. it's pretty spiffy already, except maybe a year or so from now i'll probably decide to rearrange it somehow. but, that's just how i do things =)

i like this side too, but i can't decide what to put on that big wall. we have one picture to frame {a batik that stephen's aunt brought us from sri lanka.....it's incredible!}...so i guess i'll wait until we frame & hang it to see what to put with it. i made the pillows on the couch, but i think i need to make more. projects, projects =)

On The {healthy} menu tonight....

Upon looking for a healthier way to make gyros, I came across this recipe. It's not exactly a "gyro", but I think it will make a good substitute. I had an out-of-nowhere craving for them, and since the hubby loves gyros {and grilling}, I figured, why not?

As far as health goes....it adds up to about 330 calories per serving and 5g of fat. Doesn't sound too bad =)

I will have to come back later and let you know how they came out. =) Here is the recipe, found at eatingwell.com.

Indian-Spiced Chicken Pitas

1 lb boneless, skinless chicken breasts, trimmed
1 1/2 teaspoons garam masala, divided
3/4 teaspoon kosher salt, divided
1 cup thinly sliced seeded cucumber
3/4 cup nonfat plain yogurt
1 tablespoon chopped fresh cilantro or mint
2 teaspoons lemon juice
Freshly ground pepper to taste
4 6-inch whole-wheat pitas, warmed
1 cup shredded romaine lettuce
2 small or 1 large tomato, sliced
1/4 cup thinly sliced red onion

1. Preheat grill to medium-high or position rack in upper third of oven and preheat broiler. If grilling, oil the grill rack (see Tip). If broiling, coat a broiler pan with cooking spray.

2. Sprinkle chicken with 1 teaspoon garam masala and 1/2 teaspoon salt. Place the chicken on the grill rack or prepared pan and cook until no longer pink in the center and an instant-read thermometer inserted into the thickest part registers 165°F, 4 to 8 minutes per side, depending on the size of the breast. Transfer the chicken to a clean cutting board and let rest for 5 minutes.

3. Meanwhile, combine cucumber, yogurt, cilantro (or mint), lemon juice, the remaining 1/2 teaspoon garam masala and 1/4 teaspoon salt and pepper in a small bowl. Thinly slice the chicken. Split open the warm pitas and fill with the chicken, yogurt sauce, lettuce, tomato and onion.

NUTRITION INFORMATION: Per serving: 333 calories; 5 g fat (1 g sat, 1 g mono); 64 mg cholesterol; 44 g carbohydrate; 32 g protein; 6 g fiber; 637 mg sodium; 485 mg potassium. Nutrition bonus: Vitamin C (35% daily value), Vitamin A (25% dv), Magnesium (21% dv), Iron (20% dv).2 1/2 Carbohydrate ServingsExchanges: 3 starch, 1 vegetable, 3 lean meat

Just for laughs!

I have been wanting to share these videos from Paris for a long time- but never sat down long enough to figure out how to put them on Youtube. So here are a few videos I want to share with you- just for a laugh!

Now that you're back.... Right in the middle of the two buildings where you see little dots {people} congregated- is right where we were standing. Right after we visited the Eiffel Tower, we saw all the people there and decided to check it out. It was so interesting to see what the French do in their free time.

Remember me saying how there are so many "attention grabbers and stealers" in Paris? Literally, everywhere you go, there is someone with a boom box {yes I just said boom box....that's exactly what it was} playing either rap or hip hop and dancing like there's no tomorrow! Well.....here are two videos showcasing such attention grabbers...and one obnoxious attention stealer!

So funny we had to take a second video....

Okay....so get this! A few days later we were strolling around Avenue des Champs-Elysees {a major street in Paris...where the Arc de Triomphe is located} really late at night. It was a Friday and so lots of people were still out. We decided to stop and check out another crowd to see what was going on. Guess who shows up?!?! =)

I think this guy must really get around because nobody paid him any attention. Must be an everyday thing!!!!

Cermony: part one

By the time the ceremony began, there was so much going on around me and in my head I could have gone crazy. Making sure everything was perfectly in place. Trying to discreetly make it to my place without being seen before "the walk". Delivering messages to everyone imaginable. Losing car keys. Flower girls asking me how they look and assuring me that I look picture perfect. Dad crying. The list goes on!!!!!! Today's post is a long one...so without further ado.....the processional.....

I didn't think it would ever arrive. I think I stood back there waiting for a lifetime....it felt longer than the days I spent waiting for this moment to get here!

This is my most favorite picture!

For my bouqet I used Ivory roses, ranunculus, lisianthus, and anemonies. It was very soft and natural looking, just what I wanted! I told the florist, I want my bouquet to look like I went to a garden and Just grabbed flowers and tied a ribbon around it. Basically, I didn't want a perfectly round or oval shaped bouquet. My grandmother picked the flowers up from the florist and delivered them to the house where we were getting ready {which was just down the street}. When she brought it in I just gasped and was speechless. It was perfect!!!

The florist I used was Rey Bethea in Fort Worth. They have been around since the 40's and my family has been long time customers. They knew my grandma well because she still goes there, so therefore they gave me a good discount!

I love this. It looks so dreamy =)

This is an areal shot of the bridesmaid's bouquets, I LOVED how they looked! I told the florist I want "lush" and "ivory"! This was the result. Perfect!

This is a neat shot of the gold pendant I tied to my bouquet. This was Stephen's engagement gift to me! It's so gorgeous!

The corsages and boutonniers were all made of ivory roses, and Stephen's mom made them the day before the wedding!

If you can see it....the flower girl baskets were completely adorable! I bought them at Party City for $7 each. They were plain satin baskets with pearl beaded handles. Then I bought ivory silk peonies from Michael's {sale $3 each} and cut off the leaves and stems, and hot glued the heads onto the front of the basket. So cute! And they only cost me $10 each!

The Tuesday before the wedding, a few girlfriends came over and we made these pomanders for the junior bridesmaids. I LOVE LOVE LOVE how they looked! SO easy too! I bought styrofoam balls {4"} from Michael's, and about {a large number} of bushes of the ivory flowers, which happened to be on sale for $1.50 at the time! I plucked all of the flowers off the stems, and punched holes in the ball with a pen, then filled the hole with hot glue and put the flower in. It was so simple, and so pretty! The pretty blue ribbon came from Michael's $1 bin! =)

The bridesmaid's bouquets served as table decoration at the reception. By then, they were pretty wilted though.....but I LOVE this shot of them. Hydrangeas wilt fairly quick, so make sure to have them in water up until they are used.

Just a few shots and details about "the dress".....

I found my dress the day BEFORE we got engaged {completely clueless he was about to ask}! I made an appointment just for fun at a few local bridal shops. Just to check them out....since I was just soooooo anxious =) I made an appointment at Ocone's on August 22nd. {great place by the way!} I had no intentions of finding anything or trying anything on. I KNEW whatever I bought had to be Pronovias or Watters&Watters. My two most favorites. I had never been dress shopping or even so much as seen one of these two in person. I strolled through the Pronovias and Watters gowns just about ready to fork out $2K for one of them! They were so beautiful......but after finding a handful of gowns I liked.....the consultant suggested I look in the clearance section. Rarely do I pass up a clearance section in any store, being the clearance rack magnet that I am. They just seem to find me.

So I found this beauty....100% silk shantung gown by Watters & Watters {forgot the style number} for $499! I couldn't be more extactic. But it was a size 10!....and the bridal shop wanted to charge me over half the price of the gown for alterations! So I took it to a friend my wonderful Sis-in-love found out about, a mutual friend who had worked in a bridal shop for years! =) I paid only a third of what the bridal shop wanted. And it fit like a glove, I couldn't be happier! Also it was perfect for a bolero jacket that I wanted, it had a plain bodice so it came together beautifully. I ordered extra material from Watters & Watters and had another lady make my jacket. I couldn't have been happier with the way it looked!

Remember the last post, I mentioned we got ready at Stephen's house {now our house}. The shot above was taken in our bedroom =)

The patch I had made to put in the dress.....LOL I totally forgot about it until the last minute so I had to barely stitch it in there myself!

LOVE the detail!

I like this one.....you can see the beautiful texture of the silk.

I did alot of this that day- laughing! This broach was a true beauty. I was at my seamstress's house trying the jacket on, and I mentioned how I can't wait to see how it looks with a broach... y'know the "full effect". She came in with a box of her own and pulled this one out and voila! It matched perfect and complemented the diamond shaped applique on the waist. My "something borrowed" =)

The evening bag I used at the reception, and when we went downtown for pictures. Probably my favorite accessory of the day. My mom & I searched everywhere for a bridal clutch until she finally found this one the week before the wedding at Forever 21! It carried my iPhone, camera, lip gloss, and a few other necessities. Perfect!

My beautiful shoes. Comfortable enough, considering all the running around outside we did after the ceremony! {for pictures} This shot also shows the beautiful bridesmaid's dresses. I loved the material, it glistened in the light and complemented my dress well. I had them custom made, and ordered the material from Silkbaron.com {based in LA}. I HIGHLY recommend this website for any kind of silk, especially dupioni! BEST customer service and gorgeous silks. Also their prices are fantastic. The silk I used {antique blue} was only $10.50/yd! They are overall an outstanding company.

These were the flower pins I had made for the girls to wear on their dresses. They looked adorable!

Not professional of course....but the closest shot I could find! These were the BM shoes! So adorable., and only $5 each {clearance...and could you believe it...they had ALL 7 pairs in exactly every size I needed} at Baker's!!! Something everyone loved and could wear again!

Flower girls were adorable! =) I LOVED the dresses! I about flipped when I saw them! I had them custom made too.....the style fit so well with a winter wedding! =)

News Flash! The ugly $5 orange-padded yard sale chairs have been finished! I will post pictures and step-by-step how I did it....hopefully the beginning of this coming week! Also in the cooker I have more wedding stuff, and a few other crafty things I have been doing around my house. Fun stuff!

Our Wedding, Part I

I am finally posting some more pictures and details from our wedding... I was sitting here at my desk finishing up my husband's internet advertising and while listening to iTunes, one of our wedding songs came on...thus a little inspiration =)

The day started about 7 am for me...with a hot shower and breakfast of half-eaten toast and a few sips of a protein drink {yes I was severely nervous}! Our photographer decided the night before that it would be incredibly awesome to photograph me & the girls getting ready at Stephen's house {yes it's that awesome}. So last second, I called Whitney & Brooke to come pick up me and Tasiah.....there was NO WAY I was going to be driving myself! =)

Soooooo...... I made sure Stephen & the house-full of guys were gone and getting ready at our own church {we didn't have access to the chapel yet.....so they got ready there}, and there our second shooter would photograph them. Here are a few "getting ready" shots...

I just can't wait to get my hands on these. I picked these up at a yard sale last Saturday for $5 each! There were about 15 yard sales in our neighborhood that day, but this is all I came home with. But OH they are going to be a beauty. Being a big Eddie Ross blog reader, I was pretty anxious to find something old and ugly to restore and make pretty and put somewhere in my house, preferably the entry way =)

I am thinking to either go over the wood with another coat of white, or paint the distressed look. Not sure yet. And I am leaning mostly toward covering the seats with some black and white fabric. I already have a few ideas.....

This was a group of young people gathered outside Notre Dame playing what sounded like circus music, dressed in comic strip superhero clothing. It was hilarious!

This is the Cathedral on Montmartre..I forgot what it was caled but we walked 100 stairs to get to it!!!! I was DONE for the day after that!

Paris is so different from TX, it was quite nice to go somewhere completely different, in everything from the weather, to the food, and the way people dressed, even the way they drive! I feel lucky to still be alive folks. I'm sure there's a method to their madness though =)

Time for honeymoon recaps!

Since our wedding photos are soon to arrive, I just wanted to share the abundance of pictures from our honeymoon.

A typical drugstore. Think walgreens or cvs folks. In this drugstore (which I think we took about 17 trips to this place) they sold marc jacobs and versace purses.

Infront of the arc de triomphe. in the MIDDLE of the street =)

kind of a blurry shot but this is a guy getting pounded and arrested by the police. in Paris, this is like a show. when there's a fight or someone getting arrested, alot of people (sometimes hundreds) gather around just to watch (and take pictures =)

my favorite meal of the whole trip. this is roasted duck with mushroom sauce, green beans, and a cheese fondue with bread. delish =)

Our Wedding..just a snippet =)

GOOD MORNING WORLD! =)

I just wanted to share a picture...I KNOW I was trying to wait until we got our professional pictures to share anything else about the wedding but I was just browsing through a few pictures from the wedding found this one of my FAVORITE part of the wedding.... this had to have been the most magical moment of the whole day =)

Here is Stephen singing to me, It was A-MA-ZING! I have it captured on video, I just might share it next time =) We had no cordless mics, the only one for him to use was at the podium, which would have been a little awkward. So after we lit the unity candle, he walked over the the podium to give the cue to the pianist, and at the spur of the moment decided to walk back over to me and sing with no mic. It was so incredible...I hear him sing all the time..but this time singing without a mic and so loud it echoed through the chapel, it was absolutely incredible. It was quite an emotional moment for me....so he choked a little... =) But I don't know of any other moment of that whole day that was more magical.

something interesting =) ....He sang "I Could Not Ask for More" by Edwin McCain... which has been a special song for both of us in the past... Only he changed the words to make it more fit for our wedding. From what I understand, he was going to sing another song, and the night before at the rehearsal, he decided to sing this one. Our pianist never heard it in his life, and that night, just from listening to it a few times on my iphone, he learned it and winged it the next day. The song came out impossibly amazing, I don't know how else to describe it. =)

AT LAST!

Wow....all I can say is what a beautiful wedding!! It was perfect! Right now we are in Paris, France (since monday) and it is WONDERFUL!!!

We have recorded a few videos to post here for all of you to keep up with us on our trip and to see just how fabulous this city is =) I have never been anywhere like it! We have several videos, but haven't had a chance to post so I'm sure we'll put several up here all at once.

For now, here are a few snapshots from the wedding!! Stephen's parents kindly put a bunch of pictures on a dvd for us to look at during our flight (which was 9 hours long).

Officially Engaged!

This is Stephen & I before eating at The Vault- FABULOUS Mediterranean cuisine!!! We had a lovely 4-course meal, and the people who worked there, who knew what was going to happen, treated me like royalty!

Stephen & I in the Richardson Room of the Fort Worth Bass Performance Hall after the Symphony...after the big question came out! And the big answer was YES!

Here again is the lovely painting of us, I am still amazed by it!!!!!!

This is the AMAZING painting Stephen had done....I am blown away!

Shanghai Pasta

For those who don't know- and those who do ;-) - I LOVE LOVE LOVE cooking! I had this recipe for nearly 2 years and tried it for the first time last night. That's what happens when you have as many cookbooks, recipies, email subscriptions and such like, as I have. Takes you years to get around to cooking some stuff ;-) I made this for dinner last night and had Stephen over, and it was amazing- I couldn't believe it took me so long to get around to making something SO GOOD! And I had nearly all the ingredients! So Here's the recipe- I must share it with you! I made it with Fusilli pasta, I tried to find Fusilli Lunghi- which is pictured, but Target was out. I also prepared a salad of mixed greens- cabbage, iceburg, purple and celery cabbages & carrots- with a homemade oriental dressing. Simply fabulous!

Plum sauce and Chili paste MAY be hard to find- I found them at an Asian grocery store.

Ingredients
8 ounces dried Fusilli Lunghi, or plain Fusulli
3 tablespoons soy sauce
1 tablespoon bottled plum sauce
1 teaspoon toasted sesame oil
1/2 teaspoon red chili paste (optional- but I used it! It's GREAT!)
1 tablespoon cooking oil
1 medium red and/or green sweet pepper, cut into bite-size pieces
1 cup fresh green beans, cut into 1-inch pieces or 1 cup pea pods, trimmed
12 ounces frozen peeled and deveined large shrimp without tails, thawed (26 to 30 shrimp per lb. count)
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 teaspoon grated fresh ginger
1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
2 green onions, bias sliced into 1-inch pieces
2 teaspoons sesame seeds, toasted

Directions
1. Cook pasta according to package directions. Drain. Set aside. Keep warm. For sauce, stir together soy sauce, plum sauce, sesame oil, and chili paste (if using). Set aside.
2. Pour cooking oil into a wok or large skillet. (If necessary, add more oil during cooking.) Cook and stir sweet pepper and beans in hot oil for 5 minutes. Push from center of wok. Add shrimp, garlic, ginger, and black pepper to center of wok. Cook and stir for 2 to 3 minutes or until shrimp are opaque. Stir in sauce and pea pods. Stir in pasta; heat through. To serve, top with onions and sesame seeds. Makes 4 main-dish servings.

I read this the other day and had to share.

"The secret of happiness is to make others believe they are the cause of it."

Not sure who or what it's from, but what an astounding truth! And trust me- I don't want to change this person's words of wisdom, but if I could, I would say "to let others know they are the cause of it." Either is fine.....but letting someone know they are the cause of your happiness is what you have to actually do. Put some lovingkindness into your relationships (or add to it!). Think about how much you appreciate someone, let them know! They will believe it!!!

Let someone know how happy you are to have them in your life. Not only that, make them believe it! :-)
